Training Camp

Friday, February 28th, 2014

Russ Hays/Accent Inns December 2013 training camp. I’m pretty proud to say I’ll be riding with these guys for 2014, they are giving me the opportunity to be teammates with some real hardmen of BC’s cycle racing scene as well as alongside National TT Champion Curtis Dearden. The extra support, new bike, new gear and help with travelling is going to take a lot of stress off my season. I still have a lot of work to do, on the bike training as well as off the bike, raising and saving cash to take the time off I’ll need to compete in Nationals on the road and Track, and face other elite and pro teams in stage races around the Pacific Northwest. But the support of the team and teammates just makes me want to work harder and gives me the confidence that I’ve earned my spot racing with the elites and pros.

On the start of the new season though, I’d like to say one last time how much I have appreciated the support of Jamie and Nick at Super Champion Cycle Shop. Over my first two years of racing Jamie and Nick have helped me out with whatever they could, whenever they could. I remember sitting in the grandstands at the UBC Grand Prix three years ago, drinking a six pack and watching the race with Jamie. I told him I thought I might be fast enough to be in those races (for at least a couple laps), and he told me he was going to sponsor me to race the track if I trained and went at it. They supported me in my first year of racing and through until last year where I actually raced in UBC, I won the Enumclaw Road Race and came second in Provincial Championships on the road and track. I even got to mix it up with World Tour Pros in Tasmania in December. This crazy place I’m at right now, racing pros, at times National and World Champions, targeting my own Championships this season, I wouldn’t be in this place without two good friends helping out a broke bike messenger who was winning alleycat races occasionally. Thanks guys.

Cory and Tom, the first time I did the ride from Vancouver to Bellingham. It’s since become one of my favourite rides.

Livestock have started supporting me in finding out how far I can take myself racing. Helping me get to Australia this year to race the Xmas Carnivals in Tasmania is really going to test and push me in becoming a better more experienced racer.

But beyond that, they are a local business that is not only giving back to a local athlete and racer in myself, they’ve really picked up the torch in supporting the local racing scene. They’ve come on as the title sponsor for the already super successful Feature Friday Night Race Series at the Burnaby Velodrome. We had over 190 people out on Friday night cheering on and getting involved in real, local races. Plus all the competitors. I’ve said it before, but support the local businesses that support you and your scene. And Livestock is really doing something for Vancouver track cycling this year. Mark your calendars, and keep yourself tuned to the Burnaby Velodrome website the next #FFNRS should be even faster and packed with even more rowdy fans.

And uhhmmm. as always! I’ve still got quite a few postcards on hand, they would be a nice Xmas gift for someone into photography or cycling. Just visit the STORE.

Svein Tuft and Andrew Pinfold exiting the hairpin turn at the 2012 Gastown Grand Prix.

I’ve posted on instagram that I’ve made some postcards to try and help coping with the financial stress of bicycle racing, and quite frankly living in Vancouver. If you’re interested in purchasing a postcard of the above image, from a numbered edition of fifty, please shoot me an email dylandaviesphoto(at) They are 5$ each if you’re in the Vancouver area and I can deliver them personally. If you’re from out of town they are 6.25$ so I can buy a stamp and envelope to send it to you.

If I can sell most of this series, I will make another edition of 50 of another image I shot during Superweek 2012, repeating the process until I race the 2013 edition.

And if you can help spread this page/link to friends of yours that might be interested in supporting a Vancouver artist/cyclist I would super appreciate it!
